I am in the best shape of my life at 45
We asked Steven to share his experience to help future members who are thinking of joining DSC. We wanted to give a quick shout out to Steven for taking the time to share story!
Before DSC, what would a typical workout look like?
A typical work out for me was approximately 1000-1200 calories/day on the elliptical 5-6 times/week. Usually 50 minutes to an hour. I also did a HIIT program of sprinting on the elliptical alternating with resting (normal pace). Boring, boring, boring!
What were your concerns before your first class?
My fears centered around not being able to physically perform the workout or being told I was too much of a medical risk to participate.
I was 15 months post-op from my first hip replacement, had moderate to severe osteoarthritis and limited mobility and flexibility in my right hip; both hips really and I was 4 months removed from an acute parietal stroke.
Personally, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demands of the workouts; I was scared my body would break down Truthfully, DSC took the time to work with me and modify the workouts when needed and they knew I was worried and they kept an eye on me and inspired me.
Describe your first workout?
It kicked my arse! I thought I was in shape cardiovascular wise but I was mistaken. Honestly though, the coaches were there every step of the way coaching me through with constant words of encouragement. The support from others in my group was also immense in both gaining confidence while being simultaneously inspiring as well. I was motivated to be as strong as the men and women I had started training with. I owe a lot of thanks to both the coaches and my classmates at DSC when I first began; they helped me to get where I am at now, in fact, they were instrumental.
Can you share your results?
Sure, after having three months off after my second hip replacement I weighed 252 pounds. After, three and a half months back at DSC I weighed in at 215 pounds so I lost 37 pounds after surgery. Moreover, its bigger than that, I continue to make amazing gains in strength, mobility and flexibility. I have the most muscle mass that I’ve ever had and I am in the best shape of my life at 45 and that includes being in better shape than I was while serving in the U.S. Army.
What advice would you give for any new members thinking of signing up?
