At the age of 38, I'm in the BEST shape of my life!

My journey at DSC started September 1, 2015.

I remember my first day like it was yesterday because I was beyond nervous.

That summer someone I worked with had spoken with the owner of the gym down the street and the owner was willing to open a noon class for people at our company.  My co-worker and I had never spoken about workouts, but he asked me if I was interested.

I was terrified.

I made every excuse I could think of as to why I couldn’t go, but really I was petrified of working out with people I knew from work.

I knew how I looked when I worked out, and I knew how out of shape I was and I was petrified of other people learning that about me.

A few months later after several coworkers had been going I decided to give it a try. Everyone has different reasons for signing up for a gym, and mine aren’t unlike others.

Several years ago before my husband and I got married, I signed up for a nationally known weight loss program.  I invested myself fully in the program, and at the time I felt like I was successful in that program because I had lost almost 50 pounds.

People assumed I felt better, but I actually felt worse.

I did everything without stepping a foot inside of a gym or engaging in any physical activity.  I still was winded going up and down stairs.  I still felt like I didn’t have much strength.

I knew I wanted to change that, but I didn’t know how.

I had tried the box gyms, and outside of running on treadmills or using weight machines, I didn’t know what to do when I got there.

I wanted to be stronger, and I wanted to have more flexibility and mobility so that as I got older I wouldn’t feel my age, and I knew I needed help with that.

The first day I stepped into DSC I was petrified.

I met Matt and Renee that day, and they were so welcoming, but I was still really nervous.  I remember doing the warm up and thinking it was insanely difficult.  My face was red, I was so winded, and things hurt.  Everyone moved quicker than me and I was worried I was holding people back.

And then I looked around and realized that no one cared.

The only person worried about how I compared to others was me.

That day everyone told me the warm up was the hardest part and everyone hates it.  It made me feel a bit relieved because I worried I wouldn’t be able to do the rest of the class given what the warm up involved.

I don’t remember what I did that day, but Matt and Renee checked on me a lot.  They made sure that I knew what I was doing at each station, and they helped me with my form.  It was really different from anything I had experienced in the past.

At the end Matt asked me what I thought and I said, “Well, I didn’t die.”  I wouldn’t say that I fell in love with DSC the first day, that came slowly, but I knew if I could do one workout I could do another.

I started out going to met cons on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and after a few weeks added Saturdays. Adding Saturdays was definitely out of my comfort zone because none of my co-workers went on Saturdays and so I didn’t know many people.

For my DSC family now it might be difficult to believe but I’ve always been painfully shy. I’ve had a difficult time talking with people I don’t know and doing so sometimes makes me incredibly nervous.

In the coming weeks everyone was so incredibly nice and friendly that it got me out of my comfort zone.

I looked forward to seeing those that would come to be my friends at the gym.

With time the workouts got easier.  I was still missing something though.  While I did see forward progress with getting stronger, I knew that I needed to also change my diet if I wanted to continue to get stronger.

After just over a year of going to DSC, Matt posted about a nutrition program that DSC would be doing.  I signed up immediately.  I had no idea what it would involve, but I knew I needed to do something.  I had stopped following the national diet program and had put on 20 of the 50 pounds I had lost.

I felt like maintaining weight loss on my own was impossible because it hadn’t provided a solid foundation for me to know how to eat.

The nutrition program was exactly what I needed.

After a couple of weeks I had noticed some weight loss, but the biggest change was in how I felt during workouts.  I could feel myself getting stronger.

I was able to use more weight, increase reps, and not feel as fatigued during my workouts.

Since starting the nutrition program I am officially down 20 pounds from my highest weight and I’ve lost two dress sizes.

I continue to see forward progress in everything I do at DSC, and I feel like it’s only the beginning.

To anyone afraid to try DSC, I would tell you this:  we all start somewhere.

Whether or not we share in the same goals DSC is one of the few places you’ll ever find where you’ll be surrounded by an entire family to help support and push you in your pursuit of those goals.

At the age of 38, I'm in the best shape of my life!

Last year I did something I thought I’d never do in life:  I signed up for a Spartan Race, and when I ran it with my DSC family I was pleasantly surprised by how many things I could do.

I’m already looking forward to the next race.

I truly cannot say thank you enough to Matt, Renee, Tommy, Chris, Kurtis and Luke for motivating and supporting me; for pushing me when I didn’t think I had it in me and celebrating my accomplishments with me.

And thank you to each of my DSC family members.

There are so many of you who probably have no idea that you’ve encouraged and motivated me.

Each and every day I see so many of you who continue to push yourselves and it’s that drive that inspires me to be a better version of myself.

Many people ask me why I go to DSC, and the answer is always the same:  I could go to a gym and work out near people, or I could go to DSC and work out alongside family that will cheer each of my victories and push me towards the next one.
